Eckstein, David
We have admired him since he came to us. A small man with a big heart. He plays hards, he comes from a family with medical issues and he always made that a priority to be a family man. A quiet soft talking man. We just admired everything he did. Oh, let’s not forget he gave that awesome car he won to his brother, A great citizen.
That is not the requirement to be the starting shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals. The lead-off man to boot. David just doesn’t get it done anymore. Now he is in line for another contract (more years and possibly more money). We need to, we MUST let him go. The lead-off batter that we need has to be out there and better than David Eckstein. Possibly cheaper, possibly not. Brendan Ryan, I believe will not get the chance or enough chances to do that with TLR as manager. I am not a BR fan yet anyway.
So, in recap, we need a better lead-off batter that can play a better than average shortstop. Any ideas? I have one but will withhold that thought to hear your ideas.
Chime in.

I can’t say that I do have an idea for a replacement at SS or leadoff. I’m pretty sure Ryan is not a long-term solution.
And I’m not terribly opposed to a one-year deal for Eckstein. I don’t expect we’ll be going anywhere in ‘08 anyway.
But if someone wants to outbid us, more power to them.
I see now he is reportedly eyeing 4 yr/$36mil contract.
If so, that is way too much and too many years for his frail body.

Oh, heck yeah.
If he can get that somewhere, he’s got to take it. He’ll get a nice ovation when he comes to play at Busch, which is fine.
There’s no way the Cardinals have any business signing him for four years, no matter the money.
4yr/$36mil????? Are you kidding me? Well, thanks for the memories, David. I wouldn’t give him more than 1yr/$5mill.
With rumors about the cards trying to move rolen it wouldn’t be a bad idea to try to aquire a SS, IMO ryan would make a fine everyday 3rd baseman, he’s good with the glove and hit .290 which is more than i can say about most of our offense
