Who’s the Cardinals Bargaining Chip This Season?
Last year the Cardinals could sit back and wait a bit because teams were willing to take a chance on a young Colby Rasmus. This year is may a bit different and challenging.
With the news that Chris Carpenter is not pitching this season, the Cardinals are likely looking for pitching help. What is a team to do?
Options available:
- Ride the season out- This could happen but the natural conclusion to this is not a winning one. The team will not win with Joe Kelly on the mound and Lance Lynn adding more innings to his arm than he has ever pitched before. Plus the tired arm of Jaime Garcia can’t be taxed when he returns.
- Go younger and take our lumps- What I mean here is bring in the young gun pitches and give them several big league starts but don;t overwork them. I am talking about Carlos Marinez, Shelby Miller and John Gast. Each get 4-7 starts and check them out. Results here are that the Cardinals are not likely to win the division but get need time on the mound.
- Trade a prospect with some add-ons- who do we have that other teams want? The list starts with Martinez, Miller, Wong and Taveras. I believe we make all efforts to hang on to them. So who is left? Matt Adams is the sacrifice. He will lose his first base spot to Allen Craig on a full-time basis. Adams can provide power for another team. If he is traded it is likely other parts need to go with him. Skip Schumaker, Daniel Descalso or even Ryan Jackson out of the minor leagues.
Relievers are needed in St. Louis. It may be time to call-up Keith Butler.
