Spring Training

Cardinals Spring Training 2013

I just got home from Spring Training yesterday and wanted to share some thoughts….

Taveras is a hitter. That is no surprise to anyone. He has handled ST pitching very well. He is not as fast as I thought he was expected to be. In fact, he kind of lumbers around the bases. His arm is above average but not a show-off type. He will not make the roster for the Cardinals as the beginning of the season.

Kolten Wong- Didn’t get much time in each game as he entered in the 7th or later in most games. He has a good glove. Probably the best defensive 2B on the team. His hitting at ST was just average. His speed is adequate. Likely going to Memphis to start the season.

Charlie Tilson- Was hurt last year and got a few AB’s this spring. He is 2nd fastest on the squad in ST IMO.

CJ MCElroy- This kid can fly around the bases and will be in the OF patrolling for the Cardinals in late 2014 or all of 2015. Has major leaguer written all over him.

Matt Adams- Adams has a problem in making the squad and that is management has an infatuation with Ty Wigginton and may not see the roster at the beginning of the season. Too bad for him as he has power but is average to below in his defensive skills.

Justin Christian- Good gap power and a sleeper. He has speed and slightly above average in the outfield. I hadn’t heard much about him before ST but he will make a good OF’er in Memphis or Springfield.

Shelby Miller- Good. We all knew that. He is capable of starting in the Bigs now. My opinion…. The team waits 30 some days after the season begins to put him on the roster. This allows them one more year of contract control.

Kelly, Rosenthal, Wacha- all impressive with live arms. Michael Wacha turned some heads but they sent him to the minors for some seasoning. I think Kelly gets the 5th starting spot for the reason I stated above.

Not a youngster but Ronny Cedeno may get released. He has been putrid.

One other note— The Cardinals are looking at a few pitchers from other organizations (like Bud Norris) which to me means that team may be ready to ship a few prospects for a legitimate shortstop.

St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training – 2013
