You just got to love this time of the year. February is here and Spring Training is just about ready to begin. Officially, the off-season continues but very little is done to make moves for the next couple of months that are bigly. 🙂
The Cardinals did announce their tv schedule for Spring Training yesterday and here it is:
So, soon the fight for positions will take place.
The first base job has been handed to Matt Carpenter. Let’s face it Carp is here because of his offense. His defense at any position he has played hasn’t been very good. What happens to Matt Adams? He is also lefthanded and if he is just a bench player and a LH pinch hitter, he has became an expensive one.
Second base has been given to Kolten Wong. The problem is they never seem to allow him to play long before they throw in Gyorko or Carpenter at second. This season they need to hand with him and see how he can do long term. We might also see Greg Garcia get some time at second.
Third base is Jhonny Peralta’s spot. Gyorko is his primary competition for it. Let Peralta play and play. He seems to have decent first halves AFTER the first month of the season.
Shortstop is Aledmys Diaz. Period.
Outfield is started by Dexter Fowler in centerfield. He is a switch hitter that should play everyday. Randall Grichuk is in left and Stephen Piscotty is in right. Thise should be set for almost the entire season. Tommy Pham may be the 4th outfielder.
Yadier Molina catches and Eric Fryer spells him. Carson Kelly comes if one of them gets hurt.
The batting order could be:
The Cardinals are lacking in power this season which means Matt Adams will be the new Brandon Moss and appear to pick up the slack.
The pitchers will be sorted out in another blog.
It should be fun season but I fear we still don’t have enough to catch the team from Chicago. Let’s hope we do.
