Corner outfield, no bats, Russ Springer and we get two hits
I am embarrassed. Not that the Mets swept us, because they are really good (Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes). But the fact is we can’t field in the outfield, we can’t hit the ball and we have wasted roster spots.
First, the corner outfielders have been atrocious on defense. So Taguchi on Sunday can’t catch a ball…. (‘it’s in the lights”) and Skip had one conk offhis head while diving for a ball (it was in the lights) and then Preston Wilson lets one fall in front of him and then can’t catch a ball sailing away from him for a whole slew of runs to score. Add that to Preston striking out twice. He is a waste of a roster spot. If need be, bite the bullet and let a younger players get the experience…ala John Rodriquez. Even Rick Ankiel that was labeled by scouts in Spring training as the best athlete on the field.
Next comes the hitting, or lack of it. 2 runs in 3 games. Wow, aren’t we hot? We couldn’t hit in Spring training but remember the wind was blowing out all over Florida. Excuses, excuses, excuses. The bats have not been there and we had the same problems with that quite a bit last year. The organization did not address this need in the offseason. Actually, what area did they address? NONE. Oh wait, we got Kennedy. That should make the difference. No offense to Adam, I like him and all but that is ALL they did.
Russ Springer. Another waste of a roster spot. Can’t pitch but we got him cheap. He allowed the game to get completely out of control. I wish they would have kept Dove for the pen. The bullpen is going to be another Achilles heel. Hancock has retained his propensity for allowing gopher balls. Whiplash city.
Braden Looper did a good job but can we afford to have 4 starters that average about 5-6 innings per start? No, we can’t. The bullpen is not good enough for that.
Izzy got his work in, but it was under no pressure. unless losing 10-0 is pressure. He got them out 1-2-3. Maybe that is a sign of some good things ahead.
Two hits..just 2 hits for the WHOLE night.
The Mets have the swagger, the bats, the defense and the pitching. It is going to be tough to ever get on an even keel with them.
Recap: 20 runs for Mets in 3 games- 2 for Cardinals
Winning pitcher- Maine Losing pitcher- Looper
It’s only 3 games but our weaknesses are glaring.
Take tomorrow off.
